“Drive-In” Review

Hooray!

Summer’s here!

Well, kinda.

Okay, okay, not officially, but one of the first signs of summer is here: Drive-ins!

The boarded up ice cream stands that have looked so forlorn as I passed them during the long winter that we’ve all had to suffer through have finally opened like the petals of a flower. (Poetic, right?)

One of my son’s favorites is the Saegertown Dairy Inn.  Not only do they have great eat-in-your-car appeal (although they do offer ouch!-inspiring wooden picnic benches), they seem to really love being open and serving the public.

Why say that?

Unlike many ice-cream stands that are open just June through August, the Saegertown Dairy Inn open their doors (well, serving windows, actually), in February!

Yeah, February!

My son, while driving for USPS two winters ago, saw a sign in the window saying “See you in February!”

Now, that’s dedication!

My recent visit was an enjoyable, albeit the weather was cold and rainy.

The Grasshopper milkshake they offered on the day I visited was worth risking bypassing my normal chocolate shake.  The green-colored milkshake was topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup and chocolate chips.  I think the ice cream stand must’ve had some leftovers from St. Patrick’s Day because in the shake there were tiny green shamrocks.

The Kielbasa Dog that I ordered was yummy, greasy, juicy goodness. Served on a warm bun with green peppers the sandwich was so flavorful it didn’t any condiments such as mustard.

The four Mexican potato skins as a side also hit the spot. The hollowed-out skins with smooshed potatoes, jalapenos and taco sauce that when eaten there was enough sauce to drip down my wrists in a good way.  Make sure to get enough napkins!

The barbecue ham sandwich was good, but not what I’d expected.  I was planning on chunks of pork covered with BBQ sauce but instead it was just thin, flat slices of deli ham on a bun.  Good though. Once I got it home and let loose with the BBQ sauce from my cupboard.

Next time you’re on a Sunday drive, stop at the Saegertown Dairy Inn and treat yourself to a yummy summer meal—even if the Northwestern Pennsylvania weather disagrees with the calendar!

Eat your veggies, Dearies!
