October Evenings at MCA

Presenting art from within a 250-mile radius, Meadville Council on the Arts offers its autumn show, “October Evenings.”

Approximately 40 artworks from a variety of mediums –pottery, painting, photography and sculpture – illustrate an abundance and variety of artists and their unique visions.

“Raven’s Harvest” a painting by Anna Bradshaw depicts a raven perched atop a pumpkin that sets the tone for this Halloween-time show.

“Rustee Truck” by Tabetha Kopta is an almost trompe l’oeil (“deceives the eye”) creation. From a few feet away “Truck” appears to be a photograph.  It’s only when the visitor is up close that the truth is revealed: it’s actually a very detailed drawing using colored pencils.

Sculpture-wise, there’s plenty to admire.  Edward Jonasen’s “Remembering Yesterday” is an amalgamation of knick-knacks (coinage, a skeleton key, a small wrench, a salt shaker top), that has the visitor’s wandering eye traveling over the artwork to discern its meaning.  Jen Anthony’s “Heavy Metal” is a guitar-shaped work fashioned from gears, cogs and possibly a motorcycle chain. “Lineman” from Tessa Peters is a tabletop metal work depicting a telephone pole and a tiny lineman composed of a spring and a bolt with a tiny copper loop in his hands.

Fashioned from a piece of wood, “Cowboys” (see image) by Christina Sanborn appears to be a painstaking piece of work depicting men on horses in front of a barn. But how was it created? A wood burning kit? An Exacto knife?

Finally, “New Mexico Diptych” is two abstract photographs in a single frame by ErieCulture.Guru contributor, Gregory Greenleaf. Who knew that guy had any talent? Ha-ha!

        Don’t “ghost”  “October Evenings!”
