Smoky Martin’s BBQ

The overwhelming aroma of tangy-sweet barbequed meats strikes the ravenous searcher for foodstuffs when they drive down Park Avenue in Meadville.

Lifted from my vehicle upon these scents, Le Gourmand entered Smoky Martin’s BBQ in search of a meal to be scrapbooked upon my taste buds.

Smoky is not a dine-in establishment; it’s a smallish take-out only business, so no need to bring your bbq bibs with you; you’ll just have to pig out at home.

When I called in my order, I was told it’d be ready in 15 minutes. Knowing better, Le Gourmand ran some errands, arriving within 30 minutes and found the two employees”a cook and cashier”still assembling the meal. Finding the workers not particularly chatty, I bided my time checking out the wood burning barbeque oven that occupied the left portion of the interior just across from cash register.

Wanting to dive into Smoky Martin’s offerings big time, I ordered The Pig Pen, (above) i.e., pulled pork nachos, that contained a cornucopia of nachos drenched with melted Cheddar cheese, black olives, BBQ sauce, onions, jalapenos, Banana Pepper rings, and cooling off the heat of the peppers, sour cream.

The Brisket Philly Sandwich came with mouthwatering brisket along with cooked onions and peppers, melted Cheddar cheese, smooshed between two pieces of French bread and covered with”take a guess–barbeque sauce.

As a side dish Le Gourmand ordered a Loaded Baked Potato, (above) choosing pulled chicken as my meat for this unique side. Opening the styrofoam container, Le Gourmand spied the biggest spud he’s ever seen! Served with a large dollop of cole slaw on top, beneath it hid Cheddar cheese, butter, jalapenos, onions and, of course, barbeque sauce.

As a second side dish, Le Gourmand ordered two corn bread muffins. Would you like them topped with honey? asked the reserved checkout guy.

Yes! was my enthused reply. Warm corn muffins topped with honey? Delicioso! (A word to the wide: Eat them hot or room temperature. Refrigerated honey and muffins even warmed up in the microwave are a definite no-go.)

Le Gourmand was disappointed at the lack of desserts, however, especially since the online dessert cart looked so scrumptious! Belgian Waffle and Ice Cream, Strawberry Shortcake, and more, all out of stock.

Hearty portions, mouthwatering snack food, next time you’re in Meadville, give Smoky Martin’s BBQ a try.

Happy dining, Foodies!
