Paintings & Pots an Art Review

A college reunion of sorts?

Two Edinboro University students are currently featured at Meadville Council on the Arts’ Heeschen Gallery.

Entitled simply “Paintings & Pots” the exhibit features oil paintings by Debra Shingledecker and pottery by Ron McCorkle.

Approximately 60 “oils” of Shingledecker’s are on display; flora and felines her most prominent subjects. Whether capturing images of nature outdoors such as “Fall/Neighbor’s House and Maple Trees,” “Lillies in Garden” or within indoors such as “Cat by Winter/Window,”  “Zinnia and Cat,” the painter’s use of bright colors demonstrates the artist’s love of capturing nature–or recumbent kitties””with her talented brush.

Over 40 pottery creations by McCorkle are contained within the show.  With most of the works are given generic titles “Teapot,” and “Container,”  one can only appreciate the patience and craftsmanship to fashion these three-dimensional artworks.  However, a small series within his oeuvre on display stands out.  Titled the “Don’t Shoot Series,” it’s three small creations several inches tall that features humanoid image–two of which have their arms outspread and bullet holes in their chest.

A group of different types of ceramic figurines.

Try as I might to draw a connection between the artworks, I can’t.  Different mediums, of course, but I still try to figure a parallel between their creations, yet they’re simply disparate; unrelated to one another.

But what’s wrong with that?  The visitor gets two unique exhibits for the price of one. Even better, when you consider admission to the gallery is free (although donations are appreciated.)
