Doc Holliday’s Bar & Grill

Restaurant Review

Last time I was near Erie just off I-90, I spotted a restaurant I’d never heard of in all my years living in the area. Doc Holliday’s Bar & Grill. As I stood across the street waiting for my takeout, the place looked kinda, well, odd what with all the window shades drawn around two in the afternoon–and it wasn’t a particularly sunny day.

Something seemed ominous, iffy, even a little dangerous, so I decided next Sunday when I visited Erie I’d definitely skip the Arby’s and try something…different.

Same time, different Sunday we entered bar & grill. I was a little disappointed that the entrance didn’t have the old Western swinging doors like the Long Branch Saloon on Gunsmoke had”especially since its namesake, Doc Holliday, is emblematic of the American Old West due to his participation in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Dark, quiet except for the country music countdown on the satellite radio, we found a table and sussed the place out. Three customers were huddled together at the bar and paid us no mind. We were to be the only diners in the place. Western décor with a picture of the good doctor himself (D.D.S., that is; he was actually a dentist), hung from a wooden beam in the center of the restaurant that looked much smaller on the outside.

Since I didn’t want to disrespect our ghostly host, I ordered Doc’s Angus Burger, a charbroiled burger, well done, topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion; the toasted, crunchy Kaiser roll, warm and grilled with butter. I was not disappointed; if anything, I was surprised. It was probably one the best burgers I’d ever eaten. It tasted like it was grilled outdoors at a picnic, rather than in a kitchen; only the piping hot fries dissuaded me of the idea of going out back and searching for a charcoal grill and a guy wearing an apron with a corny phrase emblazoned on it.

My partner ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap composed of sliced chicken tenders, with just the right around of hot sauce that made it not too hot, but gave it just the right amount of flavor. Consisting of lettuce, onions, tomato and cheddar cheese that were all still cool, it indicated that the wrap wasn’t sitting under a heating lamp but made quickly, then very soon served. The wrap came with hot pub fries and a crisp dill pickle. Washed down with a twisted tea and a sweet tea we were filled up enough that dessert wasn’t necessary considered–‘cuz heads up, pardners, ain’t no desserts here. Guess y’all have to mosey to somewhere else to get your sweet tooth filled.

While we were waiting for our meals, we saw a sign on a stage that promoted karaoke during the week; and, according to their website, line dancing lessons are offered Tuesday evenings.

(Cowboy) hats off to Doc Holliday’s Bar & Grill! Who knows? The vittles served here might even make ole Doc himself crack a smile.
